Optimisation Tips for Your Website
You’re more likely to retain visitors to your site if the pages load fast . A fast loading site holds attention , so the won’t go clicking around other windows .
Table smart :
In browser table don’t show up on a page until the content with in the tables have been downloaded , making a page seem slow . Avoid nested tables and long vertical tables . Instead , stack tables on the top of each other pages then appear to load faster as each table shown up faster . In this context , its better to place your navigational links horizontally towards the top as the will show up before most of the rest of the page . Keep the most important links at the top and the rest on the left , are keep top-level selection on the top and the subsection on the left .
To make a table stand out on a page , use a border around it rather than a fixed image , that is fixed in size . Nest the table with in a single cell table with a cell padding of one pixel ( or more for thinker border) and a bckground of the color you want for the border .
PC Security
Some useful tips to secure your windows from unauthorized access and protect your data ,
Disabling Sharing :
If you have a standalone machine , there’s no reason to enable the File and printer Sharing features . To disable it , open Control panel and double-click on the Network icon . You will see a list of installed protocols , including ‘ File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks ‘ . Click on File and printer Sharing , then click Remove, and finally click OK . Reboot your PC to save changes .
Encrypting File System :
Windows XP Professional has the Encrypting File System features installed by default . Unlike Windows 2000, this is automatically enabled as soon as you start using Windows XP to create files and folders. But you will need to have hard drive formatted in the NTFS format as FAT32 does not offer this functionality .
Turn off guest Account access :
To turn off guest account access , go to Start> control panel , and then double-click on User Accounts . Click the guest accounts and turn off Guest access .
General CD Writing Tips
CD media :
Before planning to access data using CD-RWs or CD-Rs, check the hardware for compatibility . Only DVD-ROMs and multi-Read CD-ROM drives can read CD-RWs . Older CD-ROM drives may not be able to read silver CD-Rs
Buffer underrun
If you just brought a super – fast burner , but your copies are unreliable , you may need to check how fast your CD-ROM drive can read data . CD-R and CD-RW drivers have memory buffers to help prevent the interruption of the data stream . If your CD-ROM driver isn’t delivering the data to the CD-recording drive fast enough , it breaks the stream and generates an error called a buffer underrun.
The CD-ROM drive needs to be reading data at least twice as fast as the burner is writing it . For example , a 40X CD-ROM drive may end up reading your files at only 10x . In this case , 6x burner should be set to record at 4x to avoid buffer underruns .
It is recommended that you enable the file/disc caching feature on the device and settings screen to reduce the possibility of buffer underrun
The Right Media
Not all Cd-recordable media are the same . Your result may vary depending upon brand you use .If you notice little pops and clicks in your recordings , find another brand that works better with your burner. Expensive CD-Rs may be more reliable , but it’s not uncommon to find cheaper ones that works just as well .
Also , keep in mind that traditional audio players can’t read CD-RW discs .
Cloaking Folders and Files in Your Site
Site cloaking allows you to exclude folders and file types in a site from operations such as Get or Put . You can cloak individual folders , but not individual files. To cloak files , you must select a file type , and Dreamweaver cloaks all files of that type . It remember your settings for each site, so you don’t have to make selections each time you work on that site .
For example , if you’re working on a large site and don’t want to upload your multimedia files each day, you can use site cloaking to cloak your multimedia folder, and the system excludes files in that folder from site operations your perform .
You can cloak folder and file types on the remote or local site . Cloaking excludes cloaked folders and
files from the following operations :
* Put, Get , Check In and Check Out
* Reports
* Select newer local and newer remote
* Sitewide operation , such as check and change links and search /replace .
* Synchronize
* Asset panel contents
* Template and Library updating
Dreamweaver excludes cloaking templates and library items from Get and Put operations only . It does not exclude these items from batch operations , because it might cause them to get out of sync with their instances . You can perform an operation on a specific cloaked folder by selecting the item in the ’site’ panel and performing an operation on it . Performing an operation on it . Performing an operation directly on a file or folder overrides cloaking .
Bios Configuration Setup
The BIOS is essential for the optimum performance of a PC . The settings explained below will help you to manage resources that affect your computer’s performance .
Reduce boot time
You can minimize the time your computer takes to boot, by tweaking a few basic settings . Enter the BIOS by holding down the [Delete] Key, just after you switch on the computer . Go to the Advanced BIOS options of the main BIOS menu .
Begin bu ensuring that the Quick POST(Power-On Self Test) is enabled. Disable the Boot up Floppy seek option, and set the first boot as your hard drive – the system wastes time to attempting to boot from another devices, Such as the floppy , or CD-ROM .
More Memory Speed
You can also adjust the time taken for data transaction to happen . The default value for this is 6/8, which is slower , but more stable than lower values . Lowering the number will boost system performance , but at the risk of stability .
Its usually possible to reduce the SD RAM cycle Time to 5/7 your hardware should be able to handle it . Look for this particular entry in the Advanced Chipset Option .

Get the best Quality Scan
The quality of the scanned image depends as much on the scanner as on the scan settings . Usually , you need to be careful about two things; Scanning with high quality settings , and correcting scan errors(lines and Patterns ) that are not intended to be on the page . Use appropriate resolutions for scanning – 300 to 600 dpi is good for photos . Keep the scan setting at the maximum colour depth the scanner supports .
When you scan content from magazines or newspapers , you will notice a lot of lines on the scanned image. The best way to reduce this pattern is to use the Descreen/Auto Descreen option in the scanner software . Ghost images (dark areas picked up from the back of the page ) can usually be corrected by changing the brightness and contrast settings . Experiment with these controls to find the best settings . Experiment with these controls to find the best settings for your scanner . You can also , place a thick white paper over the document being scanned to reduce this effects .
Always Ensure that the glass on the flatbed is free from dust, fingerprints and other such marks , since these tend to show up on the scanned images . Uncompressed TIFF is the best format to save the scanned images , since it saves the images without any loss of quality .
Maintaining Your Computer
Motherboards Drivers
More than being just functional patches, driver updates for motherboards can immensely boost system performance – especially if the updated drivers contain fixes for major issues. Regardless of which chipset your motherboard is based on , there are a few thumb rules for optimizing driver-related setting for peak performance .
First before installing a fresh set of drivers, make sure to uninstall the existing set . Do this from Control panel > Add or Remove Programs . Select the drivers that you wish to remove and click the ‘Remove button’ . This way you can ensure that only new files are installed , and that there is no trace of older drivers .
When installing updated drivers , pay close attention to the options offered during installation . The decision you make , in each installation step, will affect the way your computer runs . For example , when installing the Via Hyperion drivers, you are asked to make decision on the working of the AGP ,and should always select the ‘High Performance ‘ Option .
Air Flow :
The most important cooling principle is proper airflow . A traditional ATX cabinets has two fans , one to suck air, and other to expel hot air . To maximize airflow within the cabinet , carefully twist, tie or tape up all loose cables, and places them away from critical components , such as the CPU, hard disk and RAM .
Heatsinks
The CPU is the most utilised and most important components in the system . To extract the best performance , you should have a high quality heatsink and fan combination . Consider buying Thermaltake, Ever cool, Akasa and other such well-known heatsink and fan combinations . They do cost on the higher side, but they boost your system’s performance as well increase its life .
